So after waiting (im)patiently since the original Land Rover Defender was sadly discontinued in 2015, we have now all finally seen the new model. And it’s ok….? Isn't it? It’s not terrible, and, for those that don’t already, I do think we will gradually learn to love the new design.

Regardless of the quality of the design, some levels of resistance are understandable- if only for sentiment alone. After over 65 years of dominating the 4x4 market in the UK, the original Land Rover Defender was iconic and very much a part of our countryside (and later, our cities) landscape.

Regardless of your where you stand on the new design, orders have already proven it to be extremely popular.   The popularity of the new design has also reignited interest in the original, as people compare the models.

The current interest and popularity of both vehicles, unfortunately, isn’t overlooked by car thief gangs, who already have a strong focus on the original Defender. This is because the discontinued model is now highly valuable, with the sum of its parts being even more valuable on the black market.

This is why, no matter whether you prefer old or new, it’s never been more important to 'defend your Defender' with a Land Rover Defender vehicle tracker.

WHY A GPS TRACKER FOR LAND ROVER DEFENDERS

With both models being highly desirable, using the best GPS trackers for Land Rover Defenders will both protect your asset as well as provide peace of mind. However, for the new model especially, it’s likely your insurance providers will actually insist that you install a vehicle tracking device.

NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER TRACKER OPTIONS

If your insurance provider has requested that you install a GPS tracker for your Land Rover Defender, they will be referring to the Thatcham approved vehicle tracking devices.
The most common Thatcham approved category for vehicles over £40,000 is the S5 vehicle tracker.

As well as a 24/7 emergency monitoring service, you will also be protected by the ADR (Automatic Driver Recognition) System. The ADR recognises you as the authorised driver of the vehicle when you enter and leave the vehicle. If anybody else tries to move your vehicle without your permission, an instant alert is triggered in the control room.
They can then confirm the theft, and work with the responding police unit, guiding them straight to the vehicle - usually within minutes.

ORIGINAL LAND ROVER DEFENDER TRACKER OPTIONS

The original Land Rover Defender is now considered a modern-day classic. However, an unfortunate consequence of this accolade is the alarming and sudden escalation in Land Rover Defender thefts.
Recent reports are claiming that the increase in theft has escalated by as much as 75%!
Concerned owners are now rushing to upgrade their vehicle security and car tracking devices to avoid the increasing likelihood of this inconvenience and heartache.

SELF INSTALL LAND ROVER TRACKERS

It’s not always a proviso by insurance providers that you need to install an insurance approved vehicle tracker for your Land Rover.
Trackershop’s range of GPS trackers allows you to protect your vehicles and monitor them from your own private mapping panel. You can even view your tracker from the palm of your hand through your mapping app.
You can monitor your tracker in real-time, as well as view its full history. This will show any address, street, a location that it has visited at any point.
You can also set up movement alerts and safety zones to monitor any unauthorised use or movement.

Safety zones in particular are invaluable security features, as they allow you to set up a virtual fence around any location where you are keeping your vehicle. If your Land Rover leaves this area you receive an instant alert straight to your phone!

If your Defender has in fact been stolen, you will be able to track its movements directly from your mapping panel!
There are 2 main car tracking device options for your Land Rover security

MAGNETIC GPS CAR TRACKER

As the industry leaders, Trackershop has developed a comprehensive range of magnetic GPS trackers to cover any and all of your needs.

No matter what size, shape, battery life is required we can provide you with a device that will attach covertly underneath any vehicle, trailer, caravan or expensive asset.

The benefit of using a tracking device in this way is that it can be hidden discreetly without needing access to the inside of the vehicle or to attach it to the vehicle's power source- as your tracker has its own long-life battery.

Our range of Magnetic GPS Trackers caters to every purpose and security need.

The range of sizes and shapes means that there are plenty of places for these trackers to be hidden without detection.

HARDWIRED GPS CAR TRACKER

Our ProFleetman is perhaps the most cost-effective and easy to install hardwired tracking device available. If you prefer a permanently installed tracking device then the ProFleetman is the perfect choice for the security of your vehicle.

The tracking device can be installed in minutes and arrives with you ready to start tracking straight away. The ProFleetman is supplied with everything needed to get started, including the hardwiring kit and an additional antenna to ensure the best possible GPS signal strength. Although installation is quick and simple it is always best to instruct an auto technician for this job.

The ProFleetman can be installed covertly, with no indication of its presence in the vehicle at all. It also has a 7-day reserve battery built-in, so should the battery become disconnected your tracker will still work.

As an additional option, you can also use a Trackershop insurance approved tracker. At this stage there are 2 major benefits of installing a Thatcham approved car tracker for your Land Rover.

  • 1) Lower insurance premium

You may have already noticed an increase in your insurance policy for your Defender. When a car reaches the end of production they are instantly considered a rare vehicle and are deemed ‘limited edition’. It also means parts are harder to source, and therefore more expensive. This will be reflected in the price of your insurance policy- and installing an insurance-based car tracker will help bring that cost down significantly.

  • 2) Theft recovery

Again, the moment a vehicle is considered rare, it instantly becomes more desirable to thieves.

Of course, your insurance policy will cover theft- however, as we know, a Defender is so much more than just a car. Due to their grit and longevity, many Defenders become part of the family.

The Land Rover Defender is even Queen Elizabeth II's favourite run-around whilst out on her royal grounds!

Therefore there is no replacement for your own Defender, and it's so important to keep it safe. Further to this, the dramatic surge in crime that we've already seen is only expected to increase as the original Defender becomes even more rare and valuable in the months and years to come.

The majority of thefts are devised through organised crime groups, and the vehicles are shipped out of the country in a worryingly short time span. When this occurs there is a tragically low recovery rate, leaving owners distraught. Any of our GPS car trackers will significantly decrease the risk of theft and improve the chance of recovery if the worst does happen. If you would like some further help in choosing the best tracker for you then please do get in contact with us here at Trackershop. Here are some additional tips to further improve the security of your Defender. 1) Engrave your vehicle registration on every window.

The first thing a thief is likely to do is change the number plate on the vehicle. Replacing the windows is not as simple, making the vehicle harder to sell to any unsuspecting punters. Still, this may not act as a fail-safe deterrent, as you may find that your pride and joy is then stripped down, and sold for their individual valuable parts. 2) Don't leave your key in the ignition. This one sounds so obvious, but it is something that many owners still do. When vehicles are used on farms or for work purposes leaving the key in the vehicle makes it more convenient for multiple drivers to share the vehicle.

Even stashing the key somewhere like on a tyre in the spare wheel cover will be located quickly by a persistent thief.

  • 3) Add an alarm. A good old fashioned alarm may be all that it takes to make a thief scarper. Especially in a built-up, well-lit area.

4) Keep the vehicle in a locked building. If you have a lockable garage or out-building it is worth considering this as your Defender's overnight home. By carrying out the above points, and just remaining vigilant in general, should ensure that your Land Rover Defender stays with you- where it is treated with the respect it deserves. After all, if they're good enough for the Queen then they're certainly worth defending!
