Ghost Immobiliser. How Does It Work?

Ghost immobiliser installations have become extremely common. This is due to how effective they are against all of the most commonly used theft techniques.

This highlights the need for reliable vehicle security, such as an Autowatch Ghost Immobiliser, to protect your vehicle from theft and unauthorised access. By installing an Autowatch Ghost Immobiliser, you can be sure that your vehicle is safe and secure and that you won’t be at risk of becoming a victim of car theft.

The Ghost II is the most advanced CAN-Bus immobilisation system

Entering your PIN Code

When your engineer installs your Ghost Immobiliser they will set your unique PIN sequence with you. This can be reset by you after the engineer leaves - be aware that any errors in reprogramming your PIN that lead to an engineer revisit may incur a service charge.

Changing Your PIN Sequence

To change your PIN sequence please follow the below instructions. You will be provided with a hand over card by your engineer after your installation. This will also have instructions on how to change your sequence. Please note that your engineer will most likely program your Ghost with a four button sequence. You can change your PIN anytime to a sequence of up to 20 actions. However, 4 digits provides a good balance between being user-friendly AND ensuring comprehensive security. This is the same number of actions as a bank card PIN code, where there is a 1 in 10,000 chance of guessing the PIN. With even more buttons to choose, the odds are even better with your Ghost!

To enter your sequence follow these steps:

1. Switch on your vehicle ignition
2. Press each button in your sequence. Completely and in the order in which it has been set up.
3. Wait until the indication signal flashes twice.
4. Start your vehicle

Service/Valet Mode

Your Autowatch Ghost has a service / valet mode as standard. When in this mode it means that your PIN sequence will not need to be entered in order to start your vehicle.

This is used when your vehicle is being serviced, valet parked or under any other short term use where a service provider may need to drive your vehicle.

This is not an override function and does not allow your vehicle to return to full driving functionality that it had pre Ghost installation.

This is for practicality when your vehicle is under maintenance or being parked for you. Your vehicle will automatically exit service mode when a speed of 30mph is exceeded. If this happens, your Ghost will revert back to needing your PIN sequence to be entered in order for the ignition to start

Entering Service / Valet Mode

1. Enter your PIN sequence as normal
2. Once the indicator flashes twice press the service button 5 times
3. Wait for your indicator light to flash 5 times
4. Your Ghost is now in service mode

To Exit Service / Valet Mode

Manually exit service/valet mode any time by entering your PIN while the ignition is switched on

Troubleshooting

Problems Entering Disarm Sequence

These tips are helpful if you are trying to enter your disarm sequence are not getting your 2 flash confirmation that the Ghost is disarmed.

• Are there any switches that need to be in a particular position before entering the code (mirror adjustment, cruise control on, fan on etc.)
• Are you waiting for the 2 flash confirmation before trying to start
• Try waiting 5 seconds before trying to enter the disarm sequence, if that does not work try waiting 10 seconds after switching on ignition before trying the disarm sequence
• Make sure you are switching on full ignition, not just accessory power. The dash lights should all light up and then most of them will turn off

Finally if none of these are working try these things.

1. Use the 4 digit emergency code on the back of the emergency code behind the scratch off area (check card for details)
2. Remove the vehicle battery for 2 minutes and try the normal process again

Problems With Stop/Start

The stop/start eco mode on modern cars is a very complicated and sensitive system that requires just the right inputs before it will work correctly. These include battery voltage, engine temperature, external temperature, what electrical systems are active and many
more.

When the system does not work as expected it can be very difficult to diagnose what is causing the problem, in almost all cases it is not Ghost related but here are a few things you can try if you are having a problem and suspect it is Ghost related.

DOESN'T MY CAR ALREADY HAVE AN IMMOBILISER?

It's highly likely that it does! Factory-fitted immobilisers have been installed as standard by manufacturers in all vehicles since 1998.Factory fitted immobilisers protect your vehicle if a thief does not have your key or tries to 'hot wire' your vehicle. However, modern theft techniques include key hacking, key theft, and relay attack. All of these allow a thief to bypass the factory fitted immobiliser.

HOW DO CAR IMMOBILISERS WORK?

When you enter in to your vehicle with your key / fob, a code is sent from your key to the ECU (electronic control unit). If the code is correct the car will start as required, by activating the

  • Fuel system
  • Starter motor
  • Ignition

If the code is wrong or someone tries to hotwire the car, the immobiliser will not allow the vehicle to start.
